Diabetes can be controlled and prevented. All it requires is few good changes to your lifestyle along with following the medications and diet on time!

Your diet is important.

Suggestions for diabetics to regulate their diet:

  • Include lots of vegetables and fruits
  • Do not overcook the vegetables
  • Include food that contains fiber
  • Avoid fried food
  • Reduce the intake of fat
  • Avoid carbohydrates before 2 hours to bed
  • Avoid processed carbohydrates
  • Have a protein-rich diet
  • Avoid any kind of wheat flour which is not whole wheat
  • Have 5 to 6 small meals, instead of 3 big meals
  • Drink lots of water

Medical Intervention

Diabetes DietThere are various types of medications available for diabetics, each having its very own unique ability. Usually, a combination of one or more medications is prescribed by the doctor after thoroughly analyzing several factors such as severity of diabetes, age, medical problems and health of the diabetic.

Do not self-medicate and always take medications as prescribed the doctor.

Physical Activity

Obesity is a key risk factor for diabetes [over 80% of diabetics are overweight].
Overweight and obese people should bring their weight under control by following a strict fitness regime. Even those with a normal weight should keep their weight under control.

Exercise helps in building up muscles but burning away the fat, which is essential for controlling diabetes.

The type of exercise that is best suitable for a person should be decided after consulting the doctor.

Here are few common rules to be followed for any type of exercise:

  • Do not eat anything for 2 hours before and after the exercise
  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after the exercise
  • Do not overdo any exercise as this can result in injuries
  • If you feel any sort of discomfort after the exercise, consult your doctor whether you should continue with the exercise

Alternate Regimes

Other than physical activities, there are also some regimes such as yoga, stress management methods, massage and acupuncture could also help managing diabetes. These regimes are especially useful for those who cannot perform physical activities.

Role of Insulin

Insulin is a hormone that regulates the blood glucose level in the body. Diabetics either have very little or no insulin in their body. Taking insulin orally will not help, as it is destroyed in the process of digestion.

Hence, insulin is given to diabetics in the form of injections or using other devices such as insulin pens, insulin pumps and insulin jet injectors. A word of caution: In some people, insulin can cause side effects such as low blood glucose level, allergies and rashes.

Alternative Therapy for Diabetes

It is important that you take care of your body as a whole instead of just focusing on the problem you have. A holistic approach towards your health increases the strength of your body physically and mentally, thus helping your body to heal naturally.

Just following the diet and taking the medications regularly will not help; you should be able to differentiate between the good and the bad for your heath and should also take an effort to follow them.

Making certain changes in your lifestyle such as a healthy diet, quitting alcohol and smoking, exercising regularly, taking the medications properly, getting adequate sleep, and learning ways to overcome and control stress would certainly help.
