Obesity and Effects of Obesity

Obesity is an increasing concern as far as health is considered. An increased weight is associated with metabolic syndrome which includes hypertension, increased blood sugar levels, increased cholesterol levels and a decrease in good cholesterol (HDL) to name just a few.

A sedentary lifestyle, lack of activity, a changing eating pattern, stress etc. are the primary causes of obesity. Genetic factors also contribute to obesity, however modifiable factors as mentioned earlier can help to reduce consequences of obesity.

More than body weight, the body fat of a person is more important. This can be determined by the Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR). For women, WHR should be < 80% and for men <95%.

Childhood obesity is a matter of huge concern today. Children below the age of 18yrs gain weight which can increase the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, cancers etc. while approaching adulthood.

Obesity also  has an effect on your overall personality in terms of a decreased self esteem, low confidence level, increased susceptibility to diseases, low productivity and many more.

Exercise and dietary modification is the key for weight related issues. Daily physical activity will improve your mood, psychological status, improve hormonal balance, fat loss, muscle development, muscle toning etc.
