 Diabetes: The Warning Signs

Diabetics in low and middle income populations are middle-aged and not elderly

Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes Mellitus is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough, or does not respond to insulin.Insulin enables cells to absorb glucose in order to turn it into energy.

Types of Diabetes -

Type 1 Diabetes: It affects 10% of people in whom the pancreas produces no insulin.

Type 2 Diabetes: It affects 90% of people in whom either the pancreas produces a reduced amount of insulin or the cells do not respond to insulin, or both.

Gestational Diabetes: It occurs during pregnancy, causing a rise in blood glucose levels.

Diabetes Warning Signs - 

  • Dehydration
  • Nausea & Vomiting
  • Increased Fatigue
  • Polydipsia (Increased Thirst)
  • Polyuria (Increased Urination)
  • Polyphagia (Increased Appetite)
  • Weight Loss
  • Infections (Bacterial/ Viral/ Urinary Tract Infection)
  • Poor Wound Healing
  • Blurry Vision

If you show any of the above signs, seek medical attention, immediately!!

Diabetes - Are you at Risk?

If you think you are at risk get tested!!

Some risk factors of Diabetes are -

  • A first degree relative with diabetes (mother/ father/sibling).
  • Age: Increasing age increases your chances of developing diabetes.
  • Waist Circumference: Men with more than 34 inches waistline and women with more than 32 inches waistline are at higher risk for diabetes.
  • Overweight: Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 23 increases the chances.
  • Hypertension: Blood pressure at or above 140/90 mm Hg increases the risk.
  • Abnormal cholesterol levels: HDL (good) cholesterol, levels under 35 mg/dl and/or a triglyceride levels over 250 mg/dl increases your risk.
  • History of gestational diabetes: Developing diabetes during pregnancy can increase your risk.
  • Sedentary lifestyle: An inactive lifestyle can increase your chances of developing diabetes.

Diabetes is not contagious. People cannot "catch" it from each other.

One in every five diabetics in the world is Indian.

Impact of uncontrolled diabetes -

  • Blindness
  • Kidney Failure
  • Stroke
  • Coronary Heart Disease

Diabetes - Do's & Don't's

Do's

  • Have timely meals & eat about the same amount of food each day
  • Have three proper meals & light snacks in between
  • Check your blood sugar level regularly
  • Check your weight from time to time & always maintain an ideal body weight

Dont's

  • Do not feast or fast
  • Do not eat immediately after a workout
  • Do not smoke or take any form of tobacco
  • Do not drink alcohol

Factors affecting your blood sugars include

  • Food: What and how much you eat and the time of day, affects your blood sugar level.
  • Exercise: The more active you are, the lower your blood sugar is.
  • Medication: Medication used to control hypertension & cholesterol can increase blood sugar.
  • Illness: Fever or other illnesses can raise your blood sugar level.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol counts as carbohydrate calories to your diet.
