World Sight Day World Sight Day

World Sight Day - 8th October

The theme of World Sight Day in year 2009, is "Gender and Eye Health"; it recognizes that:

  • Two-thirds of blind people worldwide are women & girls
  • In many countries, men′s access to eye care is twice that of women
  • Effective strategies can successfully address this inequity

Did you know?

  • Approximately 314 million people worldwide live with low vision and blindness.
  • Of these, 45 million people are blind and 269 million have low vision.
  • 145 million people′s low vision is due to uncorrected refractive errors like near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism.
  • Women face a significantly greater risk of vision loss than men. Two-thirds of blind people worldwide are women & girls.
  • 90% of blind people live in low-income countries.
  • 80% of blindness is avoidable i.e. easily treatable or preventable.

Why World Sight Day (WSD) is observed?

World Sight Day (WSD) is an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness and vision problems. World Sight Day is observed around the world for preventing visual impairment and for restoring sight. It is also the main event for the prevention of blindness and for "Vision 2020: The Right to Sight", a global effort to prevent blindness created by WHO and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). Globally, visual impairment is most prevalent in men and women 50 years and older: while the majority of eye conditions for this age group, such as cataract, can be easily treated, in some parts of the world there is still the need to ensure that women and men receive eye care services on an equal basis.

World Sight Day is an annual event focusing on the problem of global blindness; it aims to raise public awareness around the world about the prevention and treatment of loss of vision. This year, the event is taking place on October 8th, 2009. The day will focus on the need to ensure increased access to health services in relation to both, prevention and treatment of eye conditions, providing access to eye care, which reduces the magnitude of avoidable blindness.
