Panaji, Jun 24 (PTI) Goa today became the first Indian state to have a diabetes registry, which was launched here in association with Denmark's Novo Nordisk Education Foundation (NNEF).The registry will aim to capture details of every individual diabetic in Goa and will further assist Government health services to monitor each patient based on a unique identification number, officials said.Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat launched the registry at a function here. Denmark's Ambassador to India Freddy Svane and State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane were also present on the occasion.The registry will augment efforts in reaching out to thousands of people in Goa and thereby make a significant impact in the way diabetes is perceived, treated and managed in the state, Kamat said.Svane said in a fast-growing and vibrant economy like India, diabetes and its complications can lead to huge human and economic loss. "The initiative undertaken by the Goa Government to tackle diabetes is commendable." India has 50.8 million people who have diabetes and the economic cost of the disease is estimated to be 2.1 per cent of the GDP, the officials said.

its a very important step taken by GOA govt. To control life style diseases, Govt can play major role. They must come with strict legislation for food industry also.
