Answer: Niacin (vitamin B3) has been shown to lower triglycerides, although not as well as prescription drugs like statins. But if you're totally opposed to using prescription drugs, you can try niacin.

Answer: Ah, good question. Niacin is not as benign as it may seem. Even though it is a water-soluble vitamin; the doses required to lower LDL and Triglycerides while raising HDL are quite large. We have to consider that at high doses, Niacin has a side-effect profile comparable to many prescription agents. One such side effect, which is quite common, is flushing - where the skin turns red and may become warm and painful. Although this seems like a mild effect, many patients cannot tolerate it and must stop taking Niacin. Also consider that the level of effect with Niacin is not nearly as great as with the statins. High LDL and triglycerides, and Low HDL are all associated with cardiovascular disease; which may cause serious morbidity. Many americans have levels very far away from goal, and need to be treated aggressively - statins are the answer here. Finally, a simple answer is ease of use. Niacin is taken twice to three times a day, on a up-titrating scale - and often must be taken with aspirin to prevent flushing. Like i said earlier, these require large doses (usually about 4 pills per dose). So we're talking 15 pills a day (4 Niacin/dose + 1 Aspirin/dose) to get to a level that may be less than that achieved by taking 1 Statin pill!

I have triglecorites inherited from my dad, so my diet has nothing to do with it. The doctor prescribed me Tricor, I take Omega 3 fish oil pills. My doctor still wants my triglicerites a little lower, I don't want to be on another medication. I am looking for advice for something else over the counter that is natural and will go along with my fish oil.

This is why it is so important to keep your triglyceride levels as low as possible. How do you keep triglyceride levels down? Many doctors focus too much on cholesterol, and not enough on triglycerides. However if you have high cholesterol AND high triglycerides, your chances of developing heart disease go up exponentially. As such, both indicators must be paid attention to. As we mentioned above, triglyceride levels are directly influenced by what you eat. Anything that increases blood glucose will potentially increase triglycerides, so you should lower your intake of anything that is converted to glucose in the body. The most important step to take is to lower your carbohydrate intake. All of the most popular diets today - Atkins, South Beach, Zone, etc. are all based on a low carbohydrate diet, because it is an increase in carbs that triggers the conversion of glucose to triglycerides (fats). The low carbohydrate diet is being recommended by more and more doctors and nutritionists as science is proving the carbohydrate fat relationship outlined above. Excess sugar should also be avoided, as it is converted to glucose and in turn triglycerides much the same way as carbohydrates are. Lowering Triglycerides - Get your triglyceride levels checked Make sure you get your triglyceride levels checked as part of your next blood test. Whether or not your triglyceride levels are high, you should do your part to keep levels down, following the tips on this page. The normal level of triglycerides in your blood should be up to 199mg/dL. This is the level of triglycerides in the average healthy person. The optimal level of triglycerides in your blood would be under 100mg/dL. A triglyceride test along with the three other blood tests we discuss on this site will indicate whether or not you are at risk of developing heart disease.
