Big banana flower   1
Oil   2 tsp
Mustard   1/2 tsp
Urad dhal   2 tsp
Red chillies   3
Asafoetida   a pinch
Curry leaves   few
Cooked thuar dhal   4tsp
Grated coconut   25g
Tamarind juice   1/2 cup


  • Remove the red petals and take out the white buds from the base. Each flower has a stamen in the center. Remove it.
  • Chop and cook the flowers in salted boiling water till tender.
  • Add a little tamarind water when cooked, drain off excess water and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds.
  • When it splutters, add urad dhal and red chillies.
  • Add cooked banana flower, and dhal. Mix well.
  • Add asafetida and curry leaves and cook for five minutes.
  • Add grated coconut and serve.
