Rice   1 cup
Red gram dhal   1/2 cup
Tamarind   1 big lime sized
Potatoes   2
Fresh peas   ¼ cup
Small onions   1/2 cup
Salt   as required
Oil   10g
For masala powder  
Red chillies   10
Coriander seeds   1 ½ tsp
Fenugreek   1/4 tsp
Black gram dhal   1 tsp
Bengal gram dhal   1 ¼ tsp
Cinnamon   1 inch piece
Cloves   2
Grated dry coconut   1 tsp


  • Dice the peeled potatoes, shell peas and pressure-cook till it is three fourth cooked.
  • Cook dhal with rice by adding 6 cups of water in pressure cooker till soft. (10 minutes)
  • Soak tamarind and extract thick juice from it.
  • Fry all the masala powder ingredients in half a teaspoon of oil, till light brown, finally add dry coconut, fry for another one minute and powder it.
  • Heat oil and fry the peeled onion for 2 –3 minutes. Add tamarind extract and boil till raw flavour goes from it.
  • Mix salt, asafetida, cooked peas, potatoes and powdered spices to this.
  • Pour this to the cooked rice mixture as soon as it is removed from pressure cooker and mix well
