Overview:UTI is a bacterial infection of the urinary tract. Different parts of the urinary system are kidneys, urinary bladder, ureters and urethra. Ureters are a pair of tubes which drain urine from each kidney to the urinary bladder. Urethra is the tube that voids the urine from urinary bladder to outside.

In boys, UTI is most common before 1 year of age and in girls around 3 years of age.

The most common causative organism for UTI in children is E. coli. E. coli is normally found in stool and moves to urethra from anus causing UTI.

Klebsiella and Pseudomonas are other causative organisms and mostly detected in cases of recurrent UTI.
