I don't get it, whenever someone criticizes parents of obese children, more people get upset than not. Sure, logically parents who have obese children would get angry, but surely there aren't that many obese kids already since the majority of parents here get defensive. I'm not talking about actual medical problems(which are rare, it's a common excuse used for obesity), I'm talking about parents who feed their kids more McDonald's than broccoli.

Answer: I have to agree with midnightmoon point, that eating healthy is getting more expensive by the minute. Now I am NOT saying that is an excuse to eat junk... BUT it sure does not help matters any. For example, I have a family of 6. A package of chicken breast to feed us for one meal( 1 piece each) Is almost 20 dollars. That does not include any sides...just meat. So If I am struggling.. what am I going to get.. the 20 dollar chicken or the 5 dollar hamburger? Then it is a problem that our society has..not just kids. We have fat adults making fat kids. we love our fast food...not just mc Donald's but canned goods, pre packaged frozen meals...all which are filled with fat and junk. and speaking as someone who struggled with weight... sometimes us over weight people get defensive because we get so tired of being told we are fat..we are ugly..we need to lose weight..go to the gym blah blah blah. Ever have someone neg at you about something? It is kinda like that. Everytime you turn on the tv we are reminded we are fat and need to lose weight. we are pounded by ads for diet products... the malls are filled with tiny clothes. Just about everyone you see on tv is thin.. So even tho we KNOW we need to lose weight( or our kids) for our health and to look better we sometimes just want people to shut up about it already lol When I was overweight I was reminded every day.... so yes sometimes when someone starts a rant ( not you..you posted a question in a normal manner) about fat people or fat kids... you lose it a little. so I hope that made sense

What factors do you think are contributing to this increase in overweight kids? What strategies can parents, schools and local communities use to combat this problem.

Answer: Our schools need to provide healthier foods. Processed foods, like those used in the cafeteria are some of the worst. Many contain high fructose corn syrup as a preservative and a sweetener. And just how did the soda manufacturer weasel their way into our schools. I am not that old, but we never had a Coke machine in our school building. Again, most soda/pops are made with high fructose corn syrup. I found this web site www.understand-health.com that has several videos about the health issue children face. For parents it tough to make your child bring a health lunch from home when all their friend buy the school lunch - peer press adds stress, which can also cause weight gain. Children should be taught and fed a low glycemic diet.

Its so sad and sickening that little kids 7-15 years are getting that huge. When I go out in public thats all I see now is really obese kids and there parents have done nothing to help them. Now is this just me or do other people notice a huge obsesity spike in our youth?

Answer: It's because people drive cars everywhere instead of walking- it's partly laziness but the media can also be blamed for sparking fear into their parents that it is not safe to walk to and from school. Fast food has also become cheap and easy- again partly laziness but there hasn't been a lot of corporate responsibility. Exercise and proper diet is so important for a child. I am physically fit because I had to ride my bike to and from school and college every day for 5 years, played a sport and my mum cooked me healthy meals. Women also seemingly have less time on their hands because they pursue a career which means they don't always have the time to prepare food in the kitchen.
