Menopausal Disorders

A woman, who stops menstruating in her mid or late forties, is said to be passing through the menopausal stage. It signifies the end of the female reproductive period of life, which commences at adolescence in the early teens. In this stage, a whole range of physical and emotional changes occur in a woman. Disturbing symptoms associated with menopause arise from the fact that the ovaries are no longer producing their normal amount of estrogen, the dominant female hormone. The later stage of menopause can lead to thinning of bones. In some women, menopausal change takes place without any unpleasant symptoms, the only change really being the cessation of menstrual flow. However, many women may feel hot flushes, night sweats and diminished interest in sex. Insomnia, irritability, depression, fatigue, palpitations, dizziness and numbness are other associated symptoms.

Boil a teaspoon of carrot seeds in 150 ml of cow's milk for about 10 to 15 minutes. Take this warm, two to three times a day. This is a very soothing and useful home remedy in the treatment of menopausal disorders.

  • If you have hot flushes, avoid tea, coffee, alcohol and spicy foods.
  • Do light exercises regularly like jogging, swimming and cycling etc.

  • Take 2 to 3 grams of liquorices (Mulethi) powder twice daily as it is a natural source of estrogen hormone.
  • Taking of ashwagandha (a herbal powder available at any ayurvedic shop) with warm milk is beneficial to check emotional disturbances.
  • Beet juice (chukandar) is very useful in menopausal disorders. Take 100 ml juice, three times daily.
